On the one hand, there are the lower castes trying to take on the traditional values and customs of the upper castes, to raise their status. On the other hand, the upper castes are discarding some of these customs. Westernisation may be characterised as a movement from the. sacred to the secular. It is difficult to characterise Sanskritisation in a 'toe red-secular' of 'folk-urban frame of reference. In any case, from the view point of culture content the more important aspect to be noted is that these processes are likely to result in having a common set of cultural elements in all of Hindu socie

  Dumont, Guha, and the Danger of Stereotyping India   The case of Dumont’s book may serve as a warning to all foreigners dealing with Indian society. If modern man does not see it this way, it is because he no longer conceives justice other than as equality.” These were words once written by Louis Dumont, a French scholar and the author of the famous  Homo Hierarchicus: The Caste System and Its Implications , a book long considered as one of the most authoritative works on the caste system. It has also been heavily criticized, and I do not think it will retain its special position much longer.
